NR583NP Week 5: Discussion
Purpose
The purpose of the graded collaborative discussions is to engage faculty and students in an interactive dialogue to assist the student in organizing, integrating, applying, and critically appraising scholarly literature regarding the application of health information technologies (HIT) to support quality and safety. Meaningful dialogue among faculty and students fosters the development of a learning community as ideas, perspectives, and knowledge are shared. This discussion will support the professional formation of the nurse practitioner role.
Course Outcomes
This assignment enables the student to meet the following course outcomes:
- CO 1: Examine the role of information and communication technologies in promoting information literacy and healthcare outcomes across diverse healthcare settings. (POs 1, 5)
- CO 2: Evaluate evidence-based practices related to information use and management, technology selection, communication, and resource allocation. (POs 1, 5)
- CO 3: Appraise ethical, legal, regulatory, and professional standards for using information and communication technologies. (POs 3, 4)
- CO 5: Develop professional competencies in information and communication technologies to advance healthcare outcomes and equity. (PO 5)
Due Date
Initial posts are due to the discussion forum by Wednesday at 11:59 p.m. MT. Instructor and peer responses are due by Sunday at 11:59 p.m. MT. Students must post on a minimum of two separate days. A 10% late penalty will be imposed for discussions posted after the deadline Wednesday at 11:59 p.m. MT, regardless of the number of days late. NOTHING will be accepted after 11:59 p.m. MT on Sunday (i.e., the student will receive an automatic 0).
Total Points Possible: 50 points

Solution:NR583NP Week 5: Discussion
Current Safety Concern
One significant safety concern in our practice environment is medication errors. Medication errors occur during prescribing, dispensing, or administration, leading to adverse drug events (ADEs). Among the contributing factors to medication errors are complex medication regimens, poor communication, manual entry mistakes, and human mistakes (e.g. failure to double-check medications or bypassing health information technologies (HITs) intended to prevent these errors.
HIT Solution
The HIT that could be implemented to help prevent medication errors is the Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) system with integrated Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSS). CPOE, as described by Ciapponi et al. (2021), is an electronic system used by healthcare providers to enter and manage orders for medications, laboratory tests, imaging studies, and other diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. CDSS are integrated tools within the CPOE system that provide real-time assistance to healthcare providers by offering evidence-based guidelines, recommendations, and alerts (Cricelli et al., 2022).
Application of HIT to Enhance Safety
The CPOE system allows healthcare providers to enter medication orders electronically and has built-in safety checks, which helps reduce medication errors related to handwriting misinterpretation and manual entry, promoting patient safety (Ciapponi et al., 2021).
