Extended Reality Technology

Collaboration Café

Purpose

The purpose of the graded collaboration café is to engage students with their peers in an interactive dialogue to organize, integrate, apply, and critically appraise knowledge for nurse practitioner (NP) practice. Meaningful dialogue fosters the development of a learning community as ideas, perspectives, and knowledge are shared. This collaboration café supports the professional formation of the nurse practitioner role.

Course Outcomes

This assignment enables the student to meet the following course outcomes:

  • CO 1: Examine the role of information and communication technologies in promoting information literacy and healthcare outcomes across diverse healthcare settings. (POs 1, 5)
  • CO 2: Evaluate evidence-based practices related to information use and management, technology selection, communication, and resource allocation. (POs 1, 5)
  • CO 5: Develop professional competencies in information and communication technologies to advance healthcare outcomes and equity. (PO 5)

Due Date

Initial posts are due to the discussion forum by Wednesday at 11:59 p.m. MT. Peer responses are due by Sunday at 11:59 p.m. MT. Students must post on a minimum of two separate days. A 10% late penalty will be imposed for discussions posted after the deadline Wednesday at 11:59 p.m. MT, regardless of the number of days late. NOTHING will be accepted after 11:59 p.m. MT on Sunday (i.e., the student will receive an automatic 0).

Total Points Possible: 50 points

Utilization of Extended Reality (XR) in Nurse Practitioner (NP) Practice

Extended reality (XR) technologies like virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR) can be leveraged to improve both clinical education and patient care in nursing practice (NP).VR can be used for immersive training scenarios where nurse practitioners practice complex diagnostic and treatment procedures in a risk-free, virtual environment. As described by Jones et al. (2023), 3D ER display devices are crucial in situations that involve spatial information (e.g. visualization of medical instrument position, scars, and real-time catheter tracking. AR may also be useful in clinical settings where real-time data (e.g. lab results or imaging scans) are superimposed over the patient’s body during physical exams to aid in accurate diagnoses and treatment planning (Jones et al., 2023). MR could allow for a blend of both physical and digital interactions, enabling NPs to collaborate with other healthcare professionals in a shared virtual space, regardless of their physical location (Tang et al., 2022).
