Source of Big Data

One source of big data in healthcare is electronic health records (EHR), a digital medical record for patients. EHRs provide various data and information that can be highly resourceful for big data. These included patient demographics (e.g. age, gender, ethnicity), medical history (past medical conditions, surgical history, family history, and allergy information), medications (current and past medications, supplements, dosages, adherence, efficacy, and side effects), drug and food allergies, lab results and diagnostics (e.g. blood tests, imaging results), clinical notes (progress notes, treatment plans, discharge summaries), vital signs (e.g. blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, and respiratory rate), appointment records, and billing information. This information (Batko & Ślęzak, 2022). The aggregated data from numerous patients enables the identification of health and disease trends, and patterns across different populations thus, informing better planning and allocation of healthcare resources and improved patient care delivery (e.g. placing specialized medical services) (Batko & Ślęzak, 2022).
