General Instructions

  1. Complete the TIGER-based Assessment of Nursing Informatics Competencies (TANIC) self-assessment toolLinks to an external site..
  2. Take a screenshot of the last page of the completed TANIC self-assessment survey using a Snipping Tool or other tools. Save the image as a PDF or JPG. If you are unable to take a screenshot, please notify course faculty.

ATTENTION: Students will not receive results following completion of this survey. For the reflection questions, please recall how you rated your proficiency/competency with the skills on the survey.

Address the discussion questions below by using your self-appraisal proficiency/competency skill ratings identified on the TANIC survey.

  1. Application of Course Knowledge: Answer all questions/criteria with explanations and detail.
    • Discuss how your perceived proficiency level in informatics compared to your TANIC Self-Assessment responses.
    • Describe two competencies identified as strengths.
    • Describe two competencies identified as growth opportunities.
    • Describe at least two strategies to enhance your competencies.
    • Identify resources to support your selected strategies.
  1. Integration of Evidence: Integrate relevant scholarly sources as defined by program expectations:
    • Cite a scholarly source in the initial post.
    • Cite a scholarly source in one faculty response post.
    • Cite a scholarly source in one peer post.
    • Accurately analyze, synthesize, and/or apply principles from evidence with no more than one short quote (15 words or less) for the week.
    • Include a minimum of three different scholarly sources per week. Cite all references and provide references for all citations.
  1. Engagement in Meaningful Dialogue: Engage peers and faculty by asking questions, and offering new insights, applications, perspectives, information, or implications for practice.
    • Peer Response: Respond to at least one peer.
    • Faculty Response: Respond to at least one faculty post.
    • Communicate using respectful, collegial language and terminology appropriate to advanced nursing practice.
  1. Professionalism in Communication: Communicate with minimal errors in English grammar, spelling, syntax, and punctuation.
  2. Reference Citation: Use current APA format to format citations and references and is free of errors.
  3. Wednesday Participation Requirement: Provide a substantive response to the graded discussion topic (not a response to a peer or faculty), by Wednesday, 11:59 p.m. MT of each week.
  4. Total Participation Requirement: Provide at least three substantive posts (one to the initial question or topic, one to a student peer, and one to a faculty question) on two different days during the week.

  1. Discuss how your perceived proficiency level in informatics compared to your TANIC Self-Assessment responses.

I perceive myself to be competent with informatics; however, during the TANIC Self-Assessment, I chose “Proficient” in many of the topics/ competencies. I have a love-hate relationship with technology. I think I am proficient in using informatics at work; however, there is room for improvement when it comes to research for school or policy lookup. When taking the TANIC Self-Assessment, I realized all of the little components that tie together informatics. Things, such as email, file creation, password protection, etc., are commonly used and are big components of informatics.

  1. Describe two competencies identified as strengths.

When completing the TANIC Self-Assessment, I realized that I have many strengths when it comes to informatics. I also have many aspects that could use some work. Two competencies I identified as strengths were all aspects of email and communication via software with coworkers. While doing the self-assessment it breaks down email into all the many competencies involved that one does not think about when simply thinking about sending an email. While creating and sending an email is very simple, there are other aspects such as forwarding emails, adding documents/URLs, adding or changing who the email is delivered to, etc. There are many competencies within email that I feel I have a strong knowledge of and the ability to utilize appropriately.
